10 work habits to
help avoid late nights |
|
许多上班族总是觉得上班很辛苦,老是要加班,其实很多时候并不是工作真的很多,而是他们不知道
怎么安排他们的工作,怎么合理利用他们的时间。
如果你就是这样,那看看这十条建议吧!
Use these 10 tips to approach
each day with a clear vision
of what needs to be accomplished
and a strategy for getting
it done.
1. Start each day with a plan.
Before checking your e-mail
or voice mail, spend the first
15 minutes of your day writing
down a to-do list. When you're
done, note which items need
to be completed today, which
need to be finished over the
next few days, and which are
longer-term goals. This will
help you pinpoint priorities
for the day, and keep you
from being sidetracked by
less important items. It will
also give you the big picture
of what you have to accomplish
if you plan to stop work at
a reasonable hour.
2. Delegate.
After you create your to-do
list, scan it for items that
can be delegated appropriately
to someone else on your team.
By identifying these items
early in the day, you can
get team members started on
them right away, doubling
the rate that you're moving
through your list. Co-workers
also will appreciate having
a full day in which to juggle
tasks, rather than hearing
about them toward the end
of the day, after they may
already have a plan for their
last few work hours.
3.
Control interruptions.
Don't let unexpected e-mails,
phone calls and meetings interrupt
your day and force you into
a late night. Instead, keep
unplanned events in check
by reviewing e-mail once every
few hours instead of every
10 minutes, letting calls
go into voice mail and returning
only urgent ones immediately,
and requesting that meetings
be scheduled at a time that's
convenient for you.
4. Get to work earlier and
leave earlier.
Working late
can start a vicious cycle
— when you work later, you're
likely to wake up later, and
then get to work later, and
so on. For one week, force
yourself to get to your desk
earlier than usual and leave
it earlier. This may be difficult
initially, but you will probably
discover that getting started
earlier in the day will make
your workday more productive
by giving you planning time
in the morning, before everyone
has arrived for the day.
5.
Avoid personal tasks at work.
Some workers allow themselves
to be distracted during the
workday by personal issues
that need their attention.
While it's hard to avoid personal
needs completely during work,
regularly handling things
like bill paying, thank-you
card writing and other tasks
eats into productivity. The
time you spend on such non-work
items adds up, usually at
the expense of leaving on
time.
6.
Let the phone ring after 5
p.m.
After regular business hours
end, let incoming calls go
into your voice-mail system.
This will keep you from being
drawn into late-night work
requests and will help you
stay focused on the priorities
you identified for the day.
7. Rely on e-mail.
Many daily communications
can be accomplished with less
fanfare via e-mail than by
phone. Using e-mail will help
you avoid the necessary chitchat
that accompanies calls, and
may also seem like less of
a workflow interruption that
a conversation. Needless to
say, some business must be
handled by talking to people
directly. But most workers
can handle more communications
via e-mail than they currently
do.
8. Review your technology.
Updates to computer and office
equipment may make your work
more efficient, allowing you
to finish the day earlier.
For instance, a more powerful
computer may allow you to
finish Web research faster
or run multiple software applications
at the same time.
9.
Automate.
Look for work tasks that can
be automated with new technology
tools. For example, if you
handle the management of an
e-mail subscription list,
use a tool such as bCentral's
List Builder to automate subscription
management, so you don't waste
time manually processing subscription
additions and deletions.
10. Let the day end.
Many people who run small
companies burn the midnight
oil because they just can't
get themselves to leave. Resist
the temptation to work into
the wee hours. Giving into
it can actually make you less
productive and put you on
a path toward burnout. Set
a firm time when your workday
will end and stick to it —
even if you haven't finished
all the tasks you set out
to handle.

Difference between the person
you love and like |
|
|
In
front of the person you love,
your heart beats faster.
But in front of the person you
like, you get happy.
In
front of the person you love,
winter seems like spring.
But in front of the person
you like, winter is just beautiful
winter.
If
you look into the eyes of
the one you love,you blush.
But if you look into the eyes
of the one you like, you smile.
In
front of the person you love,
you can't say everything on
your mind.
But in front of the person
you like, you can.
In
front of the person you love,
you tend to get shy.
But in front of the person
you like, you can show your
own self.
You
can't look straight into the
eyes of the one you love.
But you can always smile into
the eyes of the one you like.
When
the one you love is crying,
you cry with them.
But when the one you like
is crying, you end up comforting.
The
feeling of love starts from
the eye.
But the feeling if like starts
from the ear.
So
if you stop liking a person
you used to like, all you need
to do is cover your ears.
But if you try to close your
eyes, love turns into a drop
of tear and remains in your
heart forever ...

Though
I speak with the tongues of
men and of angels, and have
not love, I am become as sounding
brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift
of prophecy and understand
all mysteries, and all knowledge,
and though I have all faith,
so that I could remove mountains,
and have not love, I arn nothing.
And though I bestow all my
goods to feed the poor. and
though I give my body to be
burned. And have not love,
it profiteth me nothing. Love
suffereth long, and is kind;
love envieth not; love vaunteth
not itself, is not puffed
up, doth not behave itself
unseemly. seeketh not her
own, is not easily provoked,
thinketh no evil; rejoiceth
not in iniquity, but rejoiceth
in the truth; beareth all
things, believeth all things,
hopeth all things, endureth
all things.
Love
never faileth: but whether
there be prophecies, they
shall fail; whether there
be tongues. they shall cease;
whether tliere be knowledge,
it shall vanish away. For
we know in part. And we prophesy
in part. But when that which
is perfect is come, then that
which is in part shall be
done away.
When
I was a child, I spake as
a child, I understood as a
child, I thought as a child:
hut when I became a man. I
put away childish things.
For now we see through a glass
darkly but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then
shall I know even as also
I am known And now abideth
faith, hope, love, these three;
but the greatest of these
is love. ——英国首相布莱尔

HOW TO BE A GOOD LISTENER |
|
When
I first went to London as
a student I sat alone during
parties with my glass of wine.
I hoped people would think
that someone might come up
to me and say, ‘Excuse me!
I hope you won’t mind my coming
up to you like this, I don’t
want to interrupt your thoughts…but
really, you are the only interesting
looking person in the room!
May I talk to you?”
It never happened!
Here
is some advice if you would
like to be a good conversationalist:
be an
attentive listener.
Encourage others to talk about
themselves. To be interesting,
be interested! Ask questions
that other people will enjoy
answering. Encourage hem to
talk about themselves and
what they have done.
Remember that the people you
are talking to are a hundred
times more interested in themselves
and their problems than they
are in you and your problems.
A person’s toothache means
more to that person than a
famine in China which kills
I million people. A pain in
one’s arm interests one more
than 40 earthquake in Africa.
Think of that the next time
you start a conversation.
Diogenes,
the Greek philosopher who
is supposed to have lived
in a barrel, said, ‘The
reason why we have two ears
and only one mouth is so that
we may listen more and talk
less!’
Do
you know how to get on with
people? Do you ever feel shy?
What situation makes you shy?
Do you sometimes feel as if
you don’t know how to interest
and amuse people and have
conversations with them? Do
you search desperately in
your head for something to
say? Do people find an excuse
to leave you as soon as they
can?
Try
listening! Here are some more
recommendations about listening:
(A neighbor of mine talking
about her child) ‘One evening
last week I was sitting with
Hannah, and she said to me,
“You are a marvelous mum!”
And I said, “Well do you say
that suddenly?” And she said,
“Well, although you are always
busy you always stop what
you are doing to listen to
me.”’(From How to Talk your
Way to Success in Selling)
‘You have to force your buyer
to talk …to enter the conversation…if
you expect to talk your way
to successful sale. The only
way you can do this is to
stop talking yourself and
listen.’
(From Hamlet)
‘Give every man thine ear,
but few thy voice.’
Airline
employees are taught how to
listen to complaints. If they
are able to show sympathy
and to listen long enough
the passenger’s problem will
begin to seem less important.
Psychologists,
counselors and doctors also
know that listening is part
of their job. If they listen
with care and concern the
patient may even solve the
problem! They are professional
listeners. Here is some advice
they give.
I:
Show
the other person that you
are listening.
让别人感到你在听他们说话
II:Look at them.
看着对方
III:Smile and nod quite often,
常常面带微笑,频频点头表示你听懂了对方。
IV:and shake you head or raise
your eyebrows if you don’t
follow what they
are saying.
如果 不懂就摇摇头或者皱皱眉,让对方知道调整讲话内容。
V: Don’t tap your foot because
this will show impatience.
别用脚敲地板,免得别人误会你听得不耐烦啦
VI:Don’t look at your watch
unless you really have to
know the time,(and then
you should tell
the other person why you need
to know the time).
If you show impatience then
the other
person will lose the moment
of friendship which they are
offering.
别看手表啊!
A
good listener has magic! A
good listener has the ability
to make people feel good,
and is as valuable at a party
as a good talker. But just
listening isn’t enough. One
should listen intelligently
by trying to find out what
the other person would really
like to communicate.
Look
at these two short bits of
conversation. What is the
person really saying?
‘I work for a small firm which
makes shirts. They are high
quality shirts, the sort that
cost about ¥40. It’s a good
job, really, and it keep me
pretty busy .I was promoted
to the job of export manager
last year because the previous
man retired. I suppose they
couldn’t find anyone else.
I’ve never actually been abroad.
I suppose it’s a really…’
The
way the man says these things
and how he moves and behaves
will show what he is thinking.
He may really be wanting to
say how he feels very inadequate
to do the new job. Another
example:
‘Oh, I live a very ordinary
life really. Nothing much
happens to me I seem to spend
all my time shopping cooking,
washing up, listening to other
people’s problems, not that
I mind too much …’
This
person is saying that their
life is boring and that they
have nothing to talk about.
But they might love to talk
about their children and in
their descriptions show what
their interests, their hopes
and their difficulties are.
it need not be boring. After
all, many great stories are
based on families.

How to improve your
spoken English 如何提高英语口语 |
|
Since
many Chinese students feel
that their spoken English
is poor although they can
do a good job at grammar,
it is important to find out
the reasons why they often
have such a problem. I think
there may be four main
reasons.
Limited vocabulary:
First they feel it is very
difficult to find suitable
words to express themselves.
Sometimes they know how to
answer. But as soon as they
try to speak, they hesitate
for times to search out the
words they want. So they’ll
feel less and less confident
to speak English.
Not listening:
The second reason is that
they don’t pay enough attention
to listening. The reason why
we have two ears and one mouth
is to let us listen more.
So we should do more listening.
The more you put in, the more
you’ll get out. Imagine that
you can’t understand what
others say, how can you know
what to say and how to say.
No confidence
Third, they are not confident
enough and afraid of making
mistakes. But the more fearful
they are, the more mistakes
they’ll make. What I want
to ask is that who wants to
talk with a person even dared
not speak.
Reactive learning
Forth, most Chinese students
are reactive rather than proactive
language learners. Instead
of actively seeking out opportunities
to improve their spoken English
they passively wait for speaking
opportunities to come to them
and wonder why their English
always remains poor. Native
English speakers will not
come to you asking, “Would
you like to practice English
with me?”. So what you need
to do is to maximize your
speaking opportunities.
Now we know
the reasons why many people
have problem in spoken English.
In fact that’s not very important.
The most important thing is
to find ways to solve the
problem. There are some strategies
that you can use with great
effect to improve your spoken
English.
Be confident自信
Be persistent 坚持不懈
Expand your vocabulary 扩大词汇量
Do more listening 多练听力
Do more thinking 多思考
And say to yourself every
day: “I can do it perfect.”

Love Letter No. 1
---- Proclamation |
 |
Dearest
Julie:
Just
as a poet needs inspiration
to write a masterpiece
I need
you ...
Just as an artist needs a
subject for his work of art,
I need
you ...
Just as a teacher needs a
pupil to mold into greatness,
I need
you ...
Just as a composer needs a
theme to create a timeless
melody,
I need
you ...
For
without you, Julie, my life
would be empty of all inspiration.
There will be no work of art
for me to gaze at; no person
of greatness before me; no
timeless melody to listen
to. My life will exist in
shades of gray instead of
vibrant colors, and I will
be less than whole.
In the past, the proper words
have escaped me, and my innermost
feelings have been kept locked
away in the depths of my heart.
No more - for through this
letter, I proclaim to you,
Julie, my undying love and
eternal devotion.
Yours forever,
Tony

Love Letter No. 2
--- True Love |
 |
Dearest
Julie:
It
is very important for me
to express to you how much
you really mean to me. I
wish I could do this in
person while holding you
in my arms and gazing into
your eyes. But since we
are physically separated
by miles of emptiness, this
expression must come in
the form of letters such
as this.
Julie,
I know it is difficult for
you, as it is for me, to
be separated for so long.
Life seems to be full of
trials of this type which
test our inner strength,
and more importantly, our
devotion and love for one
another. After all, it is
said that "True Love"
is boundless and immeasurable
and overcomes all forms
of adversity. In truth,
if it is genuine, it will
grow stronger with each
assault upon its existence.
Julie,
our love has been assaulted
many times, and I am convinced
that it is true because
the longer I am away from
you, the greater is my yearning
to be with you again. You
are my (enchanted Princess/Charming
Prince), and I am your devoted
(consort/Prince/Princess).
I cherish any thought of
you, prize any memory of
you that rises from the
depths of my mind, and live
for the day when our physical
separation will no longer
be.
Until
that moment arrives, I send
to you across the miles,
my tender love, my warm
embrace, and my most passionate
kiss.
Love always,
Tony

Love Poetry by Pablo
Neruda--If You Forget Me |
 |
I
want you to know one thing
You know how this is
If I look at the crystal moon
at the red branch of the slow
autumn at my window
If I touch near the fire the
impalpable ash, or the wrinkled
body of the log
Everything carries me to you
As if everything that exists
Aromas, light, medals,
Or little boats that sail
toward
Those isles of your that wait
for me
注释
1) impalpable: adj. 摸不着的,难以捉摸的
2) aromas: n. 香味,特指某物、某处的香味
3) isle: n.

 |
Romeo:
My love ! My wife !
Death, that hath sucked the
honey of thy breach,
Hath had no power yet upon
thy beauty.
Thou are not conquered. Beauty’s
ensign yet
Is crimson in thy lips and
in thy cheeks,
And death’s pale flag is not
advanced there.
Dear Juliet,
Why are thou yet so fair?
Shall I believe
That unsubstantial Death is
amorous,
Keeps thee here in dark to
be his paramour?
Here. O, here will I set up
my everlasting rest
And shake the yoke of inauspicious
stars
From this world-wearied flesh.
Eyes, look your last!
Arms, take your last embrace!
And, lips, O you
注释
1) ensign: n. 旗帜、印记
2) set…rest: 决定永远留下来
3) inauspicious: a.

To Make
the United Nations More Effective
by Recognizing Its Shortcoming |
 |
“It
would be easy on this anniversary
simply to praise and to express
support. But if we really
mind about the United Nations…then
we must make it more effective
by recognizing its shortcomings
and putting them right.” True,
there had not been another
world war, but that was “little
consolation” to the millions
killed, maimed or made homeless
in over 140 or lesser conflicts.
There were still Governments
that blatantly disregarded
basic human rights because
they had “no place in their
political systems”.
United
Nations resolutions were not
always objective; some reflected
double standards. South Africa
was properly condemned for
its degrading treatment of
black people, yet where were
the resolutions on the treatment
of Soviet Jewry? The Organizations
had not yet been able to deal
with terrorism. In some nations,
justice was still a remote
ideal. If the majority of
members wanted to influence
one Government, they “must
offer not rhetoric and abuse
but encouragement when steps
are taken in the right direction”.
In South Africa, for example,
there was a chance for progress
if negotiations were accompanied
by suspension of violence
on all sides.
There
had been fruitful work by
the Organization over the
past 40 years: it had shown
it could be a force for action-in
crisis management, setting
the stage for negotiations,
pursuing its peacekeeping
role. But the United Nations
was not a world government,
as wishful thinking had led
some to believe. It was “only
a mirror held up to our own
uneven, untidy and divided
world. If we do not like what
we see, there is no point
in cursing the mirror, we
had better start by reforming
ourselves”.

Travel in Shanghai |
 |
First
stop:
Do
you know where is the city’s
first “art street” in Shanghai?
It’s Taikang
Road.
The
420-meter-long road is quietly
tucked between Ruijin and
Sinan roads. From the outside,
Taikang Road, with its small
framing shops, grocery market
and bland galleries, is not
really worth a passing glance.
But talk to artists and trendy(showing
or following the latest trends
of fashion) fashion
mavens, and a different Taikang
Road emerges. Over the past
4 years, art studios, fashion
boutiques(small
shops selling clothes and
other articals of the latest
fashion), restaurants
and pubs have opened, all
tucked into a facade(front
of a building) that
is both 1950s postmodern and
classic early 20th-century
“shikumen”(stone-gate).
The mystery of Taikang Road
lies in not what you immediately
catch on the street, but what
lies behind it. Chen Yifei
and Deke Erh, two of the nation's
most creative dynamos, have
set up shops there, sending
property values sky high and
imbuing the street with a
"hip factor" that
money can't buy.
Taikang Road
have also attracted many foreign
artists and designers. For
them , the special postmodern
aura(distinctive
atmosphere) that permeates(enter
sth and spread to every part)
this street is reminiscent(reminding
one of sth) of established
artistic communities, like
New York’s Soho, similarly
sited in old factories. Besides,
the amount of space and the
cheap rental is also what
attracted them. And another
reason is that the special
environment can bring them
great creativity.
Taikang
Road is very different now.
Maybe no one can imagine what
it was like in the early 1950s
when food, textile and equipment
factories were built along
it where was thick with shuttling
trucks and smoke from the
factories.
Now
Taikang Road is going to be
turned into a unique venue(place
where people agree to meet),
where art melds with industry,
postmodernism meets fashion.
It will attract more and more
people and be known better.
